A wish for a teacher

If I could
I would
Bottle summer
Make August days a special feature
Distill the essence of long lazy lunches
Evenings on beaches
Give a supply to every teacher
To help them through a long dark term
A tiny light
A seed
A germ of hope.
One tiny drop each day – or two
The magic that will balance you
As you walk
The taught tight-rope
Of caring too much – or not enough
Preparing too much – or not enough
Of fretting too much
Letting too much in
To thicken your skin
Enough
But not too much.
Failing that...
Perhaps...
I'd build a world where no student is hurled on to the street
Before they've even found their feet.
Where every child has a home...
A loving, caring, happy home...
Where no parent would even dream
Of prioritising their own time to swiping a screen over reading
Playing
Having a chat.
Where mental health support is there
And children in care
Get that –
Care!
Where Ofsted is friend
Companion
Guide
Not cruel assassin from whom you must hide
Lest you be attacked;
And senior leaders have all got your back.
Where extra effort is richly repaid
And those who work hardest will get the best grade
And every school is funded like Harrow
Not scraped like a stock bone right down to its marrow.
With all that in place, your job might be fun
Who knows, perhaps, you can get it all done within your paid hours.
If those were my powers,
I would,
If I could.
