We’re not alike much, you and I.
I can’t, no matter how I try,
find a way to take delight in
things you clearly find exciting.
While you drink coffee, I drink tea.
You read a book, I watch TV.
You run fast, I stroll along.
We both conclude the other’s wrong.
And don’t, no matter what you do
explain, again, your twisted view
of politics or Brexit woes.
I fear that we might come to blows!
There’s lists and lists I could write out
of things for us to fight about
our deep mistrust for one another.
And yet, the fact is, you’re my brother.
Instead, I’ll write a little list
of all the things I nearly missed
or quite forgot I liked in you:
Things that we both like to do.
We both like spending time outdoors,
me at my pace, you at yours.
We both like time to stop and think;
we both quite like a cheeky drink.
We both love cake, and chips, and pie.
On that we CAN see eye to eye!
And, though we’re both a little odd,
we’re both a much-loved child of God.
So, for today, let’s put aside
the list of things we can’t abide,
ignore the voice that drums up hate,
take time to just appreciate
the many good things that we share.
There nothing broke we can’t repair.
What can’t be fixed with push and shove
we’ll mend, instead, with endless love.
