Heroes

What if they thought we didn’t care
If they gave in to deep despair
And one day they just were not there…

There’s heroes walk among us, not that it seems to show
They wear their valour lightly, they like to keep it so
And yet, I hope I’d recognise
The courage burning in their eyes
To see through their Clark Kent disguise.
But when heroes look so normal, would I ever even know?

For when the worst thing happens, when you’re dialling 999
Then a hero always answers, they stay with you on the line
And though you don’t know what to do
They calmly, clearly talk you through
A hero, who believes in you.
The worst day of your life, it’s true, they make it turn out fine.

For when you’ve found your dearest love, just lying on the floor
Or when the cancer’s ripped through and you can’t take any more
Or maybe you have had a fall
Out in the street or in your hall
There’s heroes answering your call
Rushing in to rescue you, they sweep in through your door.

Anyone who’s asked for help or been in that much pain
Will tell you that they never want to be that bad again
But what if you’ve a broken bone?
Imagine that you’re all alone
What if there’s no one left to phone?
How horrid waiting on your own, but worse to wait in vain.

There’s heroes walk among us; they are hidden in plain sight;
They’re people with the hearts and skills to make us feel alright.
What if they thought we didn’t care
If they gave in to deep despair
And one day they just were not there…

Let’s celebrate the NHS. Let’s pay the heroes right.
